It is time now for a weekly assignment with our Data Doctor Ken Colburn, he's joining us now via the Webcam, Ken!

Dr Ken Colburn: Good morning.

Anchor: Hey, what's up, Doctor, I'm told that we are gonna talk today about 'iPods'. Then we have a question that has been setting from Rob. He's been asking "I have a mountain of music CDs that I want to have transfered to my iTunes, but I don't have the time to get it all in. Are there services out there that will do this for me. "

Dr Ken Colburn: "You mean like this, hahaha. . . "

Anchor: Hey, hold on, tell us again, we lost it, show it again.

Dr Ken Colburn: "Just, Just the beginning of my mountain of CDs. "

Anchorman: Yeah, like that, wow.

Dr Ken Colburn: You know, I mean we all have this great little, I mean, this iPod touches get all these great features to it can hold thousands and thousands of songs. Well, it's kind of created this problem where people have these mountains of CDs, and have these great devices and there is time issue, getting those CDs transfered, so that you can listen to them on your iPod.

Anchor: Right, cause right now, you have to hook it up to your computer, burn it onto your computer. Rip, rip, I get to tell, you have to rip it on your computer, then burn it onto the device. Right, so, the idea is your way, skip the whole process, and just go straight from one and the other like that.

Dr Ken Colburn: Well, there are services where you can send your collection in, for a buck or two dollars per CD. They will do a professional transfer for you and put it all back onto, like DVD, that you can quickly transfer onto your computer, so the problem was that obviously is that when you have to ship the staff off to who knows where, you have to ensure it, you have to wait, you get to hope it all makes it back at one piece, and of course there is expense involved.

Anchor: So, what's solution?

Dr Ken Colburn: Yeah, I mean you can do that, and if you look on Google, my suggestion for anybody who is gonna do that is, look for a local company that doesn't require you to actually ship those CDs if you decide to go everywhere else, but of course we always wanna give it alternative, there is actually a way you can set your computer up to help get the stuff over it, not in a short period, not set down in one afternoon and put everything in. But there are settings that you can change in iTunes and Windows Media Player, so that whenever you pop a CD in, it's just automatically conversed or transfered into your music library, and kicks drawer when it's done and let you know it's done.

Anchor: And you don't have to spend the time telling it what to do or pressing all the buttons. Just automatically rip like that?

Dr Ken Colburn: Exactly, so if you make a few changes to your favor music program, and the most common iTunes, or Windows Media Player, er, you can do exactly that just had mountains of CDs next to your computer, and just as you're doing other things, pop the CD in and go about your business, when it done, machine would kick it back out saying "I'm ready for the next CD". So, over a period of time, you ripped that whole library into your computer.

Anchor: See, this is great Doctor, cause this is the kind of thing people don't know. I didn't know that I've transfered some of the staff to mp3 device. But I have no idea I can setup my computer, now you say just regular computer, pretty much any regular computer can handle that?

Dr Ken Colburn: Absolutely, so, we put the step by step instructions for iTunes and Windows Media Player on the free help section of our website, cause it's one of those things that's a little tough to really go through here on the air. But it is just a couple of changes to the way that iTunes and Windows Media Player use that CDs insertion action. And whoa, you start to transfer your library, so you've got three or four, five hundred CDs, your can bring out out ten at a time and you know we 've gonna months, you might be through that whole library and get it into your computer.

Anchor: So, did you do this, did you manage to get thousands of songs onto your iPod?

Dr Ken Colburn: Well, I've gone various ways. I'v got multiple computers. I'v tested some of those services and that, you know, I'm putting my kids to work.

Anchor: Haha, that's another way to save time. Right. Let your kids to do it.

Dr Ken Colburn: Absolutely, so , yeah, that's the prescription of this week is pretty simple. One go and go in set your music programs up and just auto-import those CDs, which will help you get caught up on your old library, but also any new CD you buy. You buy one or two at a time , boom them in as you buy them. Before you do that though, make absolutely sure you have enough hard-drive space for that libraries, because if you're getting low on space, you start this process, you failed your hard drive, that's could creat another problems. You gonna calculate about 50 megabytes for each CD that you gonna import, just the place you save. So you can kind of do your math and set as much free space your have. And then do yourself a favor; take a look at the CDs, make sure they're clean before you pop them in there, because if they're not, you'll get those things transfered sometimes those songs will come across, skipping or cracking, or poping. It's not cool, so just take a second, look at the CD, wipe it off then stick it into the machine, and then you're off on it.
